Improving mathematical problem solving: A computerized approach

Computers in Human Behavior, 2006
Mathematics teachers often experience difficulties in teaching students to become skilled problem solvers. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of two interactive computer programs for high school mathematics problem solving. Both programs present students with problems accompanied by instruction on domain-specific knowledge required in different ...

Brain dynamics of mathematical problem solving

2012 Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2012
The purpose of this study is to examine brain activities of participants solving mental math problems. The research investigated how problem difficulty affected the subjects' responses and electroencephalogram (EEG) in different brain regions. In general, it was found that solution latencies (SL) to the math problems increased with difficulty.

Developing mathematical problem solving skills

Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, 1998
Abstract Problem solving often requires a representation of given information in a structured form which can stimulate and support the problem solving process. FunctionLab is a computer based learning environment meeting this requirement and designed to assist problem solving and the development of problem solving skills in algebra word problems.

Mathematical Problem Solving

2003
Abstract Everyone can and should become proficient in mathematics. Furthermore, to become proficient in mathematics means to build several different—but intertwined—strands of mathematical proficiency (or kinds of mathematical knowledge) that can be used to solve mathematics problems.
