Mathematical rigor---a prerequisite for numerical analysis?

Proceedings of the 1966 21st national conference on -, 1966
Frequently mathematical errors can be attributed to applying a theorem or using a formula in a situation which does not meet all the initial requirements. An obvious example would be the use of the Pythagorean theorem to compute the length of the longest side of a scalene triangle. Such trivial mistakes are rarely made.

Numerical Analysis A Mathematical Introduction

2002
Abstract Numerical analysis explains why numerical computations work, or fail. This book is divided into four parts. Part I starts with a guided tour of floating number systems and machine arithmetic. The exponential and the logarithm are constructed from scratch to present a new point of view on questions well-known to the reader, and ...

Mathematical and Numerical Analysis of Some FSI Problems

2014
In this chapter we deal with some specific existence and numerical results applied to a 2D/1D fluid–structure coupled model, for an incompressible fluid and a thin elastic structure. We will try to underline some of the mathematical and numerical difficulties that one may face when studying this kind of problems such as the geometrical nonlinearities ...

Numerical Analysis vs. Mathematics

Science, 1965
I hope I have shown not that mathematicians are incompetent or wrong, but why I believe that their interests, tastes, and objectives are frequently different from those of practicing numerical analysts, and why activity in numerical analysis should be evaluated by its own standards and not by those of pure mathematics.

Numerical Analysis as a Topic in School Mathematics

2015
Concerns about the divide between school mathematics and the discipline of mathematics are known in math education circles. At the heart of the debate is the sense that imperatives in school mathematics differ from those in the discipline of mathematics. In the former case, the focus is on remembering mathematical facts, mastering algorithms, and so on.
