Mawlana Mawdudi and the Genesis of Islamic Economics

Mawlana Sayyid Abu’l A‘la Mawdudi (1903-1979) is credited with being the founder of Islamic Economics, and having developed the idea of an Islamic Economic System. This paper investigates and finds little support for this claim, especially in view of the difficulty in translating the Urdu words rendered as "economy" and "system".

Mawlana's Relations with the Akhīs

It is known that there were akhīs in Konya before Bahā al-Din Walad's arrival in Anatolia with his family after 1220 and his decision to settle in Konya. This Akhī structure was influenced by the Arab futuwwa and Persian chivalry, synthesized with the Turkish national culture and transformed into its own unique form.
