Maximal hyperelliptic curves of genus three

open access: yesFinite Fields and Their Applications, 2009
This paper concerns maximal hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 (and in part also genus 5 and 6), where `maximal' means attaining the upper Hasse-Weil-Serre bound. It gives an overview of which fields were known to (dis)allow for such curves and proceeds by proving new results.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Projective curves, hyperplane sections and associated webs

open access: yesLe Matematiche, 2014
An integral and non-degenerate curve $C\subset \mathbb {P}^r$ is said to be ordinary (Gruson, Hantout and Lehmann) if if the general hyperplane section $H\cap C$ of $H$ is of maximal rank in $H$.

Asymptotic behavior of solutions of nonlinear functional differential equations

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences, 1994
Using the properties of almost nonexpansive curves introduced by B. Djafari Rouhani, we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of nonlinear functional differential equation du(t)/dt+Au(t)+G(u)(t)?f(t), where A is a maximal monotone operator in a ...

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates as molecular glues

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol phosphates (IPs) and phosphoinositides (PIPs) regulate diverse eukaryotic processes. Beyond recruiting signaling proteins or acting as structural cofactors, recent studies suggest they mediate protein–protein interactions as natural molecular glues.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

On maximizing curves of degree 7

open access: yesANNALI DELL'UNIVERSITA' DI FERRARA
AbstractIn the present paper we investigate an intriguing question on the existence of maximizing curves of degree 7 with some prescribed $$\textrm{ADE}$$ ADE singularities. We give a result proving the non-existence of such maximizing septics and we give new examples of conic-line arrangements with some $$\textrm{ADE}
