Maximal expiratory flow-volume patterns in airway allergy.

open access: yes
We considered upper and lower airway allergies as different phases of airway allergy and MEFV patterns to vary according to the intensity of airway obstruction in maximal expiratory flow-volume and volume-time tests on fourteen patients with nasal ...

The conducting airways before and after gender‐affirming hormone therapy in transgender individuals

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract On average, females have smaller airways than males. The largest discrepancy in airway size occurs during puberty, when endogenous sex hormone concentrations diverge between males and females. Transgender individuals often use gender‐affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) to align physical characteristics with gender identity.

Physiological and autonomic responses to intermittent low‐lung‐volume apnoea and pain sensitivity: A randomized controlled pilot trial

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Intermittent apnoeas may induce hypoalgesia; however, the effects of low‐lung‐volume static apnoea have not been investigated. Eighty healthy participants were randomized to an apnoea group (AG) or a control group (CG). The AG performed a 6‐min protocol of intermittent static apnoea at low lung volume (passive exhalation), whereas the CG ...

Effect of an acute exercise bout on alveolar–capillary membrane permeability and interstitial fluid accumulation in COPD

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Exertional dyspnoea is a debilitating symptom in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and often persists after the cessation of exercise. The underlying mechanisms are not fully understood, and a potential contributing factor that has not previously been investigated is alveolar–capillary membrane breaching with extravasation of fluid ...

Seasonal change in maximal expiratory flow-volume pattern in patients with Japanese cedar pollenosis.

open access: yes
Fifteen patients with Japanese cedar pollenosis were examined for lower airway function. Flow-volume patterns obtained from flow-volume and volume-time curves during the pollen season (March) and outside of the pollen season (June) were evaluated.

Age‐related loss of hysteresis in the spontaneous vascular sympathetic baroreflex is associated with altered neural rather than mechanical control

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The vascular sympathetic baroreflex is critical for stabilising blood pressure. A notable feature of this reflex is hysteresis, a directional asymmetry in responsiveness during rising versus falling pressure that is evident in young adults but attenuated in older age.
