Biomineral‐Inspired Organic/Inorganic Colloidal Liquid‐Crystalline Hybrids for Photoresponsive Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new class of photoresponsive liquid‐crystalline (LC) adhesives based on biomineral‐inspired organic/inorganic colloidal hybrids is reported. These colloidal LC materials are formed by hybridization of a hydroxyapatite nanorod with azobenzene‐based forklike molecules.

Does Inspiratory Muscle Training Affect Respiratory Parameters? The Different Effects of Diaphragm Muscle-Focused Respiratory Exercise [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Sport Science
Background. Considering that breathing strategies are essential for athletic performance, insufficient scientific data exists to understand how they operate. Objectives.

Combination of inspiratory and expiratory muscle training in same respiratory cycle versus different cycles in COPD patients: a randomized trial

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2018
Background Difference between combined inspiratory and expiratory muscle training in same respiratory cycle or different cycles remained unclarified. We explored the difference between both patterns of combined trainings in patients with COPD. Methods In

[Maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures long after lung resection].

open access: yesNihon Kyobu Shikkan Gakkai zasshi, 1995
Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) were measured long after lung resection with reference to operative procedure and vital capacity (VC). MIP and MEP were measured before surgery and 3 months after surgery in 80 patients who underwent lung resection.

Functionalizing Micro‐to‐Mesoscopic Electrode Architectures for Regulating Electron Transfer Behaviors in Electrocatalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A systematic review is conducted to assess the influence of electrode architecture across micro‐ to mesoscopic length scales on electron‐transfer pathways in electrocatalysis. We discuss the structure‐activity relationships in electrocatalytic applications, including resource recovery and environmental remediation, and provide cost‐effective, efficient

Respiratory muscle work and inspiratory muscle training on cytokines, oxidative stress and diaphragm fatigue in younger and older populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Increased respiratory muscle work is encountered during strenuous whole-body exercise, and at rest in older adults and those with pulmonary limitations such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Light‐Induced Field‐Tunneling Synapses in Solution‐Processed Van Der Waals Heterostructures for Scalable, Retina‐Inspired Optical Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A scalable, solution‐processed WSe2/ZrO2‐x van der Waals heterostructure realizes a light‐induced field‐tunneling synapse (LIFTS) that activates exclusively under bright illumination, emulating the photopic adaptation of the human retina at the device level.
