Stability of Lakes near the Temperature of Maximum Density

Science, 1965
In deep lakes that are near the temperature of maximum density, stability is greatest when the decrease of temperature with depth is about one-half of the decrease in temperature of maximum density with depth. Observed temperature decreases in lakes under such conditions tend to follow the curve that produces greatest stability.

Southwest Pacific temperatures: trends in maximum and minimum temperatures

Atmospheric Research, 1995
Abstract Diurnal temperature trends are described for newly homogenised climate data sets for a large area of the South Pacific. The diurnal trends differ from those documented for Northern Hemisphere land areas, where decreases are observed in the diurnal temperature range as a result of increases principally in minimum temperature.

On the energetics of maximum‐entropy temperature profiles

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2008
AbstractThe problem of determining a maximum‐entropy state in an atmospheric column has different solutions depending on the constraints imposed. As was first shown by J. W. Gibbs, maximization of entropy in a thermally‐isolated, i.e. energy‐conserving, atmosphere yields an isothermal temperature distribution. It has since been argued that conservation

Maximum allowable temperatures in chemical reactors

Chemical Engineering Science, 1962
Abstract The calculation of the required cooling capacity in tank reactors—in order to obtain a high conversion to desired product and to prevent excessive degradation of the reagent to unwanted products— is discussed. Temperature limits, as normally specified in practice, are shown to depend on the residence time in the reactor.
