Late Quaternary population expansion in gray brocket deer [Subulo gouazoubira (G. Fisher, 1814), Cervidae, Mammalia] in Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 1031-1042, August 2025.
ABSTRACT There is little information about the changes in the abundance of mammalian species in South America during the late Quaternary, which is a key parameter to understanding past ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Here, we describe a conspicuous increase in the abundance of the gray brocket deer (Subulo gouazoubira G.

Do precipitation and food affect the reproduction of brown brocket deer Mazama gouazoubira (G. Fischer 1814) in conditions of semi-captivity?

The births of brown brocket deer ( Mazama gouazoubira) in a secondary lower montane forest called "yunga" in northwestern Argentina were compared with rainfall.

Relationship between moonlight and nightly activity patterns of the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and some of its prey species in Formosa, Northern Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The moon can profoundly influence the activity patterns of animals. If predators are more successful under bright moonlight, prey species are likely to respond by shifting their own activity patterns (predator-avoidance hypothesis).

Surviving in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation: Richness and Defaunation of Mammals in Priority‐Protected Areas of the Brazilian Midwest

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 50, Issue 7, July 2025.
We found rich and compositionally different assemblages of medium and large‐sized mammals in protected areas on the southern edge of Amazon. However, both have high rates of mammal defaunation. We argue that anthropogenic threats in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation are eroding large ungulate populations, especially peccaries.

Diversity and Activity Pattern of Terrestrial Mammal Species in Serra do Amolar, Brazilian Pantanal

open access: yesWildlife Letters, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 56-63, June 2025.
The Serra do Amolar, located in the Brazilian Pantanal, is a crucial but understudied area for biodiversity conservation. Through camera traps, we recorded 29 mammal species, including three rodent species documented for the first time in the area: Cavia aperea, Cuniculus paca, and Holochilus chacarius.

open access: yesArquivos do Instituto Biológico, 2009

Plant and frugivore species characteristics drive frugivore contributions to seed dispersal effectiveness in a hyperdiverse community

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 238-253, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Seed dispersal by frugivores is a crucial step of the life cycle of most plants, influencing plant population and community dynamics. Although very important for most ecosystems, we are just beginning to understand which are the mechanisms driving frugivore‐mediated ...
