Definition of mean residence times in pharmacokinetics

Biopharmaceutics and Drug Disposition, 1987
AbstractA new definition of the mean residence time is proposed which includes the commonly used definition as a special case. The advantage of the new definition is that it applies for both linear and non‐linear systems. Some practical advantages which follow from the new definition are discussed.

Mean Residence Time and Residence Time Distribution When Sawdust Is Dried in Continuous Dryers

Drying Technology, 2008
Information on the mean residence time and the residence time distribution is of importance when optimizing a continuous dryer. In this study, an industrial method for determining the mean residence time is developed. The produced method is benchmarked on a laboratory scale against the stop-and-empty method.

Danckwerts’ law for mean residence time revisited

Chemical Engineering Science, 2006
This paper shows that Danckwerts’ law for mean residence time in a vessel with continuous and steady through∞ow holds for a stochastic model based on a Markov chain for the particle spatial position, under a set of three very general conditions on the transfer probabilities.

Comments on mean residence time determination

Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Biopharmaceutics, 1985
In a recent paper, D. O. Chanter challenged the applicability of the use of statistical moments in estimating mean residence time and proposed an alternative approach. Errors in that paper are pointed out which involve the improper equating of whole-body amount of drug with plasma amount of drug in a kinetic system.

Types of mean residence times

Biopharmaceutics & Drug Disposition, 1988
AbstractMean residence times (MRTs) have been classified into two main groups, namely system moment MRT [MRT(S,MO] and system matrix MRT [MRT(S,MA]. There are also MRTs of individual compartments [MRT(i)] such as central or plasma compartment, [MRT(P)], and tissue compartments and the MRT of an absorption site, [MRT(A)].

Mean residence time in multicompartmental models with time delays

Journal of Biomedical Engineering, 1993
Calculation of the mean residence time (MRT) of a drug in a stationary compartmental model is classically carried out from several expressions. Nevertheless, one or more time delays between compartments modify the mean residence times. It is the aim of this paper to propose a general method for MRT calculations, in any n-compartmental models which may ...

On mean residence times in flow systems

Chemical Engineering Science, 1983
Abstract A widely accepted result of residence time theory namely mean residence time is equal to the system volume divided by the flow rate was first offered by Danckwerts[l] and later extended by Buffham[21 and Gibilaro[3] to more general cases.

Mean residence time of plutonium in the troposphere

Environmental Science & Technology, 1982
Plutonium is injected into the stratosphere by large atmospheric thermonuclear explosions. When aerosols bearing plutonium reenter the troposphere, they are removed by such processes as rainfall and sedimentation. In this work, the mean tropospheric residence time of stratospherically injected plutonium is calculated.

Mean residence time.

Methods and findings in experimental and clinical pharmacology, 1986
The definition of mean residence time in the strict sense of mathematical statistics is deduced. It is demonstrated that the area-normalized concentration time curve is an estimate of the probability density function for residence times of drug molecules in the pharmacokinetic system, provided that the area under the concentration-time profile is ...
