Interactions between coarse sediment transfer, channel change, river engineering and flood risk in an upland gravel-bed river [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Coarse sediment transfer in upland gravel-bed river systems is often neglected in the design and operation of river management schemes. Yet, it is increasingly attributed to problems within upland environments including bank erosion and enhanced flood ...

Bank Failure Mechanism of Peatland Meandering Rivers in the Zoige Basin

open access: yes工程科学与技术, 2017
:Under the action of lateral scour by near bank flow, bank failure of concave bank of meandering river is the direct drive of bend lateral migration.Field surveys in 2011—2016 suggested that numerous meandering rivers, called peatland meandering river, had ...

A Systemic Model for Understanding Business Interactions With Biodiversity and Ecosystems

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation represent critical threats to human well‐being and economic resilience, challenging businesses to understand and manage their interdependence with natural systems. This study develops a systemic framework—the BioModel—that elucidates the reciprocal relationship between businesses, biodiversity, and ...

Relationship between sandstone architecture and remaining oil distribution pattern: A case of the Kumkol South oilfield in South Turgay Basin, Kazakstan

open access: yesPetroleum Exploration and Development, 2016
Taking the Kumkol South oilfield in South Turgay Basin, Kazakstan as an example, this article summarizes the controlling pattern of different types of sandstone architecture on remaining oil distribution through examining architecture characteristics ...

Locked in Transition: Examining the Role of Paradoxical Tensions in the Transition From Industrial Cluster to Eco‐Clusters

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Industrial clusters are central to the circular economy transition, yet how they develop into eco‐clusters and the paradoxical tensions this transformation fuels remain underexplored. Drawing on 48 in‐depth interviews and secondary data from a Turkish textile‐recycling cluster, we develop an empirically grounded model of eco‐cluster transition

River meander morphometrics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A procedure for sampling and measuring meander geometry is presented. The sampling procedure, developed using a mathematically defined meander ensemble with known statistical properties, minimizes operator bias and sampling noise inherent in the digital data collection process.

When Nature Counts: Corporate Biodiversity Attention and Access to Bank Finance

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates whether corporate attention to biodiversity influences firms' access to bank loans, an overlooked question in the emerging biodiversity–finance literature. Using a novel, text‐based measure constructed from 446 biodiversity‐related keywords and applied to Chinese A‐share listed firms from 2000 to 2023, we show that ...

Biodiversity Strategies in Action—Empirical Evidence From the Food Value Chain

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There is an increasing need for better understanding of firm activities that contribute to biodiversity preservation. Panwar, Ober, and Pinkse offer a valuable typology of corporate biodiversity protection strategies based on temporal and spatial dimensions, namely, the preloss (proactive) strategies of conservation and compensation, and the ...

Performance assessment of a potential underground thermal storage facility: Case study of the closed mine Prosper‐Haniel in the Ruhr coal mining area in Germany

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of an underground closed‐loop thermal storage facility at a post‐mining site, intended for seasonal heat energy storage. Its principal design shows water flow directions in winter and summer (1, 2), heat pumps (3), an upper water reservoir (4), and connecting pipes (5).
