Information and Entropy Measures of Rendered Literal Translation

2021
The definition and effect of translation literality (word-for-word translation, as opposed to sense-for-sense translation) have been a topic in translation studies for very many years. Schaeffer and Carl (2014) introduced measures to quantify the literality of observed translations based on their distance to a hypothetical absolutely literal ...

Measuring Informativeness of Data by Entropy and Variance

1999
Measuring informativeness of data or news is particularly important as it quantifies the amount of “learning”. This is central to scientific progress as well as to assessing the direction and value of “information” and technologies. As is the case with all “indices”, the desirability of any measure of information depends on at least two considerations:

Information entropy as a measure of DEM quality

Computers & Geosciences, 2012
The Shannon-Weaver Information statistic has been proposed as a useful measure of the quality of a Digital Elevation Model. However the statistic, usually referred to as entropy, is based purely on the range of values in a dataset and their relative proportion and is not directly related to the accuracy of those values or their spatial arrangement ...

The relationship of entropy‐related measures to money information

Systems Research and Behavioral Science, 2008
AbstractThe specific purpose of this paper is to trace the development of entropy‐related thought from its thermodynamic origins through its organizational and economic applications to its relationship to money information. That trace reveals that existing entropy measures are of states or changes in states that are caused by energy processes.

Shannon's measure of information and the thermodynamic entropy

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2012
This lecture is concerned with two topics: First, we discuss the widespread confusion between a descriptor of the state of the system, and changes in the states in a spontaneous process, on one hand, and a descriptor of entropy on the other hand. The second, is concerned with a clear distinction between Shannon's Measure of Information (SMI), and the ...

Information entropy as a measure of nonexponentiality of waiting-time distributions

Physical Review E, 2008
It is shown that the information entropy based on waiting-time distributions (WTDs) offers a natural and robust measure of nonexponentiality of the distributions in the form of the Schrödinger-Brillouin negentropy, or equivalently the Kullback-Leibler divergence, and has a straightforward interpretation in terms of transition state theory.

Information Entropy, Similarity Measure and Inclusion Measure of Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets

2012
This paper introduces a new axiomatic definition of the inclusion measure for intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs, for short). The close relationships among information entropy, similarity measure, and inclusion measure of IFSs are then discussed in detail.
