Tribological behaviour of two kinds of typical hydrogel contact lenses in different lubricants

open access: yesBiosurface and Biotribology, 2019
Contact lenses have a special effect on the treatment of some eye diseases. The tribological behaviour of soft contact lenses considerably influences their clinical performance.

Determination of a set of constitutive equations for an al-li alloy at SPF conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
© 2015 The Authors.Uniaxial tensile tests of aluminium-lithium alloy AA1420wereconducted at superplastic forming conditions. The mechanical properties of this Al-Li alloy were then modelled by a set of physicallybased constitutive equations.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Prevention of damage to delicate connectors during mounting of heavy engines for testing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1971
Air-bearing-pad principle, combined with monitoring system of the air-bearing force, prevents damage between electrical and mechanical connectors joining a large engine system to the test stand during remote mating.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Influence of mechanical damage and storage on various quality aspects of potatoes

open access: yesJournal of Applied Botany and Food Quality, 2017
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of mechanical damage on both the contents of dry matter and chlorogenic acid and the degree of blackspot for five cultivars of potatoes of various earliness groups.

Increasing β-catenin/Wnt3A activity levels drive mechanical strain-induced cell cycle progression through mitosis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Mechanical force and Wnt signaling activate β-catenin-mediated transcription to promote proliferation and tissue expansion. However, it is unknown whether mechanical force and Wnt signaling act independently or synergize to activate β-catenin signaling ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Exploring Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Based Cushioning Design to Reduce Bruise Damage in Pears

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Post-harvest activities, which include sorting, loading, unloading, and transporting, are potential factors that cause mechanical damage and bruises to fresh produce. This would directly impact fruit shelf-life and, therefore, cause economic losses. This

Does mechanical damage on soybean induces the production of flavonoids?

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2018
The response of plants to grazing includes the production of chemical defense compounds such as proteases inhibitors and secondary metabolites as flavonoids, which makes them less palatable to feeding and negatively affecting the physiology of insects ...
