Development and Testing of a 10-kA Hybrid Mechanical–Static DC Circuit Breaker

IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2011
This paper presents the development and testing of the prototype of a hybrid mechanical-static dc circuit breaker (CB) for quench protection of superconducting magnets based on a mechanical switch paralleled to a static CB. In normal operation, the mechanical switch is closed and it handles the continuous flow of dc current, minimizing the on-state ...

A Fast Mechanical Switch for Medium-Voltage Hybrid DC and AC Circuit Breakers

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2015
This paper presents the design and experimental results of a Thomson coil-based fast mechanical switch for hybrid ac and dc circuit breakers rated at 30-kV voltage and 630-A current. The compact design with optimized circuit parameters and geometric dimensions of components targets 2-mm travel within 1 ms when driven by a 2-mF capacitor bank precharged

Z-Source circuit breaker utilizing Ultra-Fast Mechanical Switch for high efficiency DC circuit protection

2017 IEEE Second International Conference on DC Microgrids (ICDCM), 2017
A novel modification to Z-Source DC circuit breakers has been proposed to reduce power consumption from its predecessor significantly. The power thyristor serves as the means of circuit isolation and voltage blocking in the event of a fault in traditional Z-Source DC circuit breakers.

Feasibility Study of a Hybrid Mechanical-Static DC Circuit Breaker for Superconducting Magnet Protection

IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2009
This paper describes the feasibility studies of a hybrid dc circuit breaker (CB) for quench protection of superconducting magnets rated for current up to some tens of kiloamperes (kA) and voltage of several kilovolts (kV). The proposed scheme is based on a mechanical switch paralleled to a fully controlled static CB; integrated gate commutated ...

Low-cost ultra-fast DC circuit-breaker: Power electronics integrated with mechanical switchgear

2018 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), 2018
The paper describes a concept for fast-acting circuit-breaker using vacuum interrupter (VI) assisted by a power-electronic converter with low output voltage. The converter excites a passive resonant circuit to create current zero-crossing in the arc in the VI to make it extinguish the current.

Active Damping of Ultrafast Mechanical Switches for Hybrid AC and DC Circuit Breakers

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2017
An active damping method for Thomson coil actuated ultrafast mechanical switches is proposed, including its control. Ultrafast mechanical switches are crucial for both dc and ac circuit breakers that require fast-acting current-limiting capabilities. However, fast motion means high velocity at the end of travel resulting in over-travel, bounce, fatigue,

Optimization of a Z-source, ultra-fast mechanically switched, high efficiency DC circuit breaker

2017 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2017
A novel modification of the Z-source circuit breaker topology is presented for low voltage applications. An ultra-fast mechanical switch has been used in place of the solid-state switch (thyristor) in the Z-source circuit breaker to reduce the energy loss utilizing the very low resistance of mechanical contactors.
