Nonequilibrium thermodynamics of circulation regimes in optically-thin, dry atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
An extensive analysis of an optically-thin, dry atmosphere at different values of the thermal Rossby number Ro and of the Taylor number Ff is per- formed with a general circulation model by varying the rotation rate {\Omega} and the surface drag {\tau ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The changes in power requirements and muscle efficiency during elevated force production in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The limits of flight performance have been estimated in tethered Drosophila melanogaster by modulating power requirements in a 'virtual reality' flight arena.

Feedback from central black holes in elliptical galaxies. I: models with either radiative or mechanical feedback but not both

open access: yes, 2009
The importance of the radiative feedback from SMBHs at the centers of elliptical galaxies is not in doubt, given the well established relations among electromagnetic output, black hole mass and galaxy optical luminosity.

Prototyping Efficient Interprocessor Communication Mechanisms [PDF]

open access: yes2007 International Conference on Embedded Computer Systems: Architectures, Modeling and Simulation, 2007
Parallel computing systems are becoming widespread and grow in sophistication. Besides simulation, rapid system prototyping becomes important in designing and evaluating their architecture. We present an efficient FPGA-based platform that we developed and use for research and experimentation on high speed interprocessor communication, network ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Two-Way Shape Memory Effect Driven Solar Sails for Active Solar Radiation Pressure Modulation

open access: yesAerospace
Solar sailing has proven to be an effective solution for cost-effective and long-term space missions due to its fuel-free propulsion. While multiple large-scale solar sails based on kilogram-class satellites have been developed and tested in space, solar

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Crack-Free IN738G Alloy Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences
The IN738 nickel-based superalloy has a high Al, Ti and γ’ (Ni3 [Al, Ti]) content phase that causes notable crack sensitivity when processed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF).
