Influence of stretch and pressure as mechanical stresses on skeletal muscle

open access: yesJournal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, 2013
Mechanical forces induced by skeletal muscle contraction generate intramuscular stresses as well as external tension. Skeletal muscle cells can sense and adapt to mechanical stresses to maintain cellular homeostasis.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Computational Simulation of the Influence of Mechanical Stability on Growth Factors Activities during Bone Fracture Healing

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Mechanoregulatory healing models, bioregulatory healing models, and mechanobioregulatory healing models have been developed to investigate the interaction among the mechanical environment, biological factors, and tissue differentiation during bone ...

Glioma: the Mechanisms of Infiltrative Growth

open access: yesOpera Medica et Physiologica, 2016
Malignant gliomas are primary brain tumors considered to be one of the deadliest cancers. Despite surgical intervention followed by aggressive radio- and chemo-therapies, average survival is approximately 15 months of diagnosis. Recurrent tumors resembling all the characteristics of the original tumor mass and growing in close vicinity to the original ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Elastic and Piezoresistive Properties of Nickel Carbides from First-Principles

open access: yes, 2017
The nickel--carbon system has received increased attention over the past years due to the relevance of nickel as a catalyst for carbon nanotube and graphene growth, where Nickel carbide intermediates may be involved or carbide interface layers form in ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Quantitative cell-based model predicts mechanical stress response of growing tumor spheroids over various growth conditions and cell lines.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2019
Model simulations indicate that the response of growing cell populations on mechanical stress follows the same functional relationship and is predictable over different cell lines and growth conditions despite experimental response curves look largely ...

Spatiotemporal establishment of dense bacterial colonies growing on hard agar. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The physical interactions of growing bacterial cells with each other and with their surroundings significantly affect the structure and dynamics of biofilms.
