Modeling mechanisms

Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C: Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, 2005
Philosophers of science increasingly believe that much of science is concerned with understanding the mechanisms responsible for the production of natural phenomena. An adequate understanding of scientific research requires an account of how scientists develop and test models of mechanisms.

Investigation of interface shear properties and mechanical model between ECC and concrete

Construction and Building Materials, 2019
This paper reveals an investigation of the influences of ECC mixture construction method (i.e., common casting and spraying ECC), ECC strength grade, interface roughness of concrete substrate, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber type on shear properties of

Acoustical Modeling of Swallowing Mechanism

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2011
In this paper, a mathematical modeling of the swallowing sound generation is presented. To evaluate the model, its application on swallowing disorder (dysphagia) diagnosis is discussed. As a starting point, a simple linear time invariant model is assumed to represent the pharyngeal wall and tissue excited by a train of impulses.

Airport asphalt pavement health monitoring system for mechanical model updating and distress evaluation under realistic random aircraft loads

Construction and Building Materials, 2019
The performance of airport asphalt pavement gradually deteriorates under aircraft load repetitions. In this study, a framework of airport asphalt pavement health monitoring system was developed to evaluate pavement performance under realistic random ...

DIAGNOSTIC MECHANISM MODELING

International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, 1989
Diagnostic models of complex mechanisms are designed specifically to support diagnostic reasoning. Diagnostic reasoning is that aspect of troubleshooting which determines a set of component faults that can account for observed abnormalities in system performance.

Frost-heaving mechanical model for concrete face slabs of earthen dams in cold regions

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2019
Earthen dams are widely applied in the cold regions of northern China. However, the frost-heaving damage of concrete face slabs on the dam slopes is very serious under the dual effect of ice sheets and frost action during winter seasons. For this problem,

Modeling the Mechanical Parameters of Glaucoma

Tissue Engineering Part B: Reviews, 2019
Glaucoma is a major eye disease characterized by a progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Biomechanical forces as a result of hydrostatic pressure and strain play a role in this disease. Decreasing intraocular pressure is the only available therapy so far, but is not always effective and does not prevent blindness in ...

Mechanical model of single abrasive during chemical mechanical polishing: Molecular dynamics simulation

Tribology International, 2019
The loading process among the silicon substrate, silica cluster and polyurethane pad was performed by molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the interaction force between the cluster and pad did not change with the working pressure at ...

Fully coupled fluid‐electro‐mechanical model of the human heart for supercomputers

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering, 2018
In this work, we present a fully coupled fluid‐electro‐mechanical model of a 50th percentile human heart. The model is implemented on Alya, the BSC multi‐physics parallel code, capable of running efficiently in supercomputers.

Research of mechanical model of particle damper with friction effect and its experimental verification

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2019
Particle damping (PD) technology has a remarkable effect in reducing vibration and noise for high frequency vibration such as mechanical analysis and aviation, and has been widely applied in some engineering practices.
