The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Motion-induced eddy current testing of composite materials [PDF]
Modern composite materials are gaining more and more importance in mechanical engineering. Due to the complex structure of most of these materials, traditional NDT methods do not satisfy the measurement requirements.

Effect of the stretch rate during uniaxial testing on the mechanical properties of prolene
We assess the effects of stretch rate on the mechanical properties of Prolene® (Ethicon, Gynecare, Somerville, NJ, USA), a knitted polypropylene mesh. Prolene® , consisting of macroporous knitted polypropylene, is considered here as a suitable proxy to ...

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Mechanical and metallurgical properties of two-layered diamalloy 4010 and 2002 HVOF coating [PDF]
Diamalloy 4010, which is iron/molybdenum blend, is resistive to wear and Diamalloy 2002 is resistive to corrosion and wear. However, combination of these powders in layered structure, may offer advantages over the individual powders.

Testing of mechanical properties of sandwich structures
Strukturni kompoziti zajednički su naziv za slojevite kompozitne materijale i sendvič konstrukcije. Glavni konstituenti sendvič kompozita su čvrsti vanjski slojevi i mekana jezgra niske gustoće.
