What is new in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Purpose of review: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains a frequent and severe complication in endotracheally intubated patients. Strict adherence to preventive measures reduces the risk of VAP.

Reducing the within-patient variability of breathing for radiotherapy delivery in conscious, unsedated cancer patients using a mechanical ventilator

open access: yesBritish Journal of Radiology, 2016
Objective: Variability in the breathing pattern of patients with cancer during radiotherapy requires mitigation, including enlargement of the planned treatment field, treatment gating and breathing guidance interventions.

Loss of primary cilia promotes EphA2‐mediated endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in the ovarian tumor microenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of primary cilia in endothelial cells promotes EndMT and vascular abnormalities in the ovarian tumor microenvironment through EphA2 activation. Using human samples, in vitro models, and endothelial‐specific Kif3a‐knockout mice, we show that primary cilia loss drives the acquisition of cancer‐associated fibroblast‐like phenotypes, thereby ...

BMP antagonist CHRDL2 enhances the cancer stem‐cell phenotype and increases chemotherapy resistance in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Overexpression of CHRDL2 in colon cancer cells makes them more stem‐like and resistant to chemo‐ and radiotherapy. CHRDL2‐high cells have upregulation of the WNT pathway, genes involved in the DNA damage response (DDR) pathway and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT). This leads to quicker repair of damaged DNA and more cell migration.

Comparative Study of the Success Rate of Mechanical Ventilator Liberation between Applying and not Applying Rapid Shallow Breathing Index (RSBI) in Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure after Passing Clinical Readiness Assessment

open access: yesJournal of Health Science and Medical Research (JHSMR), 2016
Objective: To compare the success rate of mechanical ventilator liberation between the application of rapid shallow breathing index (RBSI) and no RSBI application in patient with acute respiratory failure who passed the clinical readiness assessment for ...

Simultaneous Analysis of Bacterial and Fungal Communities in Oral Samples from Intubated Patients in Intensive Care Unit

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2023
Intubated patients in intensive care units (ICUs) too frequently contract ventilator-associated pneumonia or Candida infections. Oropharyngeal microbes are believed to play an important etiologic role.
