Testing Media Richness Theory in the New Media: The Effects of Cues, Feedback, and Task Equivocality

Information Systems Research, 1998
Media richness theory argues that performance improves when team members use “richer” media for equivocal tasks. This experiment studied the effects of media richness on decision making in two-person teams using “new media” (i.e., computer-mediated and video communication).

Media Richness Theory and the Intention to Use Online Stores

open access: yesInternational Journal of Customer Relationship Marketing and Management, 2010
Although media richness theory has received considerable empirical support in explaining individual channel use and could provide important insights into the explanation of e-consumer behavior, no studies have validated this theory in explaining consumers’ intentions to use online stores.

Using RSS to support mobile learning based on media richness theory

Computers and Education, 2010
With the rapid development of mobile technologies, mobile learning has become a new trend in education. A better understanding of how to effectively use communication technologies to improve mobile learning is important. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the media richness of various message delivery methods in the proposed m-learning ...

Channel Expansion Theory and the Experiential Nature of Media Richness Perceptions

Academy of Management Journal, 1999
Experiences identified by channel expansion theory as contributing to media-use knowledge bases were hypothesized to be positively related to the perceived richness of a communications channel.

Impact of communication medium on task performance and satisfaction: an examination of media-richness theory

Information and Management, 1999
Abstract Among several theories to explain how communications media affect task performance, media-richness theory is often cited. It proposes that task performance will be improved when task-information processing requirements are matched to a medium's ability to convey information richness.

Improving Media Richness Theory

Management Communication Quarterly, 2004
Media richness theory predicts that managers, driven by the instrumental goal of task efficiency, choose media based on the match up of message equivocality and media richness. This study proposes that relational and self-presentational goals are also relevant in manager-subordinate interactions, particularly when messages differ in valence, and ...

An Examination of Consumer's Attitude towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Web Communication Using Media Richness Theory [PDF]

open access: yesProcedia, Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2014
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of media richness on attitude towards website in communicating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).We use Media richness theory (MRT) as the main theory for this paper. To meet the objective, we ...

Beyond media richness: an empirical test of media synchronicity theory

Proceedings of the Thirty-First Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2002
One widely accepted theory on media use is media richness theory. However, media richness theory was developed without consideration of new electronic media and the many social factors that can influence media selection, communication processes, and outcomes.

Extensions to media richness theory: a test of the task-media fit hypothesis

Proceedings of the Twenty-Seventh Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences HICSS-94, 1994
The richness of the communication environment and the type of task formed by dyads was contrasted in a laboratory experiment. Dyads communicated using face-to-face, videophone, telephone, and synchronous computer-mediated communication. One task was an intellective task while the other was a value-laden cognitive conflict task.

Looking for Indicators of Media Richness Theory in Distance Education

Proceedings of the 38th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2005
Distance learning is becoming a popular option for education. Course management platforms (CMP) are used to deliver distance learning courses. These include an abundance of channels by which to communicate and run a distance class. As such, CMP provide an excellent environment to test the implications of Media Richness Theory.
