Epilepsy is currently the most prevalent neurological disorder worldwide. Pharmacological therapy remains the cornerstone of epilepsy treatment, however, refractory epilepsy is still a significant clinical problem despite the release of the second generation of anticonvulsants.

An exception is the primary health scheme in Tanzania, where a novel method of medical diagnosis is used. This method of diagnosis has been extended, with the help of computer methods, for use in tropical countries in general.
