Polychromophilus spp. (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae): First Molecular Detection in Bat Flies From Brazilian Bats

This study identifies Polychromophilus sp. in blood‐feeding flies (Basilia speiseri and Basilia lindolphoi) from Myotis nigricans bats in Brazil, marking the first molecular detection of the parasite in an insect vector in this country. Two haplotypes were identified, both within the Polychromophilus murinus group.

Automated identification of spotted‐fever tick vectors using convolutional neural networks

We evaluate the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNN) AlexNet, ResNet‐50 and MobileNetV2 for the automated identification of tick species capable of transmitting spotted fever. CNNs achieved accuracy rates of ~90% in identifying ticks and showed sensitivities of 59%–100% according to species, sex, position or image resolution.

Tick‐borne spirochetes of the genus Borrelia are maintained in enzootic transmission cycles involving wild vertebrates such as rodents. The genus includes the lyme disease group (LDG), transmitted by hard ticks (Ixodidae), and the relapsing fever group (RFG), mostly transmitted by soft ticks (Argasidae).
