Journal of Neurobiology, 1984AbstractThe medicinal leech has five pairs of eyes, each with about 50 photoreceptors. Receptors produce propagating impulses which constitute their output to second order neurons in the CNS. Within the eye, receptors have diverse thresholds, and thus the aggregate output of the eye is graded with light intensity.
