Currents, Water Masses, Eddies and Jets in the Mediterranean Levantine Basin

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1988
Abstract Hydrographic measurements in the southeastern Levantine basin are analyzed, and the climatological water masses of the region and their seasonal variations are identified. We observe the formation of the salty and warm Levantine Surface Water Layer (LSW); we characterize the subsurface Atlantic Water Layer (AW); and we describe the properties ...

Length–mass relationships for transitional water benthic macroinvertebrates in Mediterranean and Black Sea ecosystems

Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2012
Abstract Length–mass relationships are potentially useful tools to estimate individual biomass, assuming a relative invariance within and among populations and, sometimes, among species pertaining to a same family or order. Here, we present a field test of these assumptions in guilds of benthic macroinvertebrates colonising transitional water ...

Climate Variability and Water Mass Formation in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea

2012
Recent changes of the thermohaline circulation in the Eastern Mediterranean (i.e. the Eastern Mediterranean Transient) and older observations of the thermohaline structure of the Aegean-Levantine region (with events of dramatic changes of deep water characteristics) reveal the very sensitive character of the regional thermohaline circulation pattern ...

Water Masses in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: An Analysis of Measured Isotopic Oxygen

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2018
We investigate aspects of the water mass structure of the Adriatic and Ionian basins (Eastern Mediterranean Sea) and their interdecadal variability through statistical analyses focused on δ18O measurements carried out in 1985, 1990, and 2011. In particular, the more recent δ18O measurements extend throughout the entire water column and constitute, to ...

Water mass properties and dynamic conditions of the Eastern Mediterranean in June 2007

Progress in Oceanography, 2012
Five locations in the Eastern Mediterranean, situated in the Ionian Sea, Cretan passage and Levantine basin, were characterized for their physical and biogeochemical properties on the basis of the data collected during an oceanographic cruise in June 2007.

The oxygen and carbon isotope distribution in the Mediterranean water masses

Marine Geology, 1999
The oxygen and carbon stable isotope compositions of the present-day Mediterranean waters have been measured in order to evaluate their variability, which is related to the specific climatic and hydrological conditions within the basin. The experimental equation between the δ18O value and the salinity of water, based on 300 measurements on surface ...

Assessment of the water mass dynamics over the western Mediterranean in the MEDRYS1V2 reanalysis

2023
We present an assessment of the water mass dynamics in a reanalysis of the Mediterranean Sea with a focus on the Western basin. We use a θ-S based algorithm to compute the fractions of the main western Mediterranean water masses : Atlantic and modified Atlantic Waters (AW, mAW), Western and Levantine Intermediate Waters (WIW and LIW)and Western ...

The forcings of the Mediterranean Sea and the physical properties of its water masses

2023
This chapter aims at introducing the reader to general concepts about the main forcings of the Mediterranean Sea, in terms of exchanges through the Strait of Gibraltar, and air-sea exchanges of heat, freshwater, and momentum. These forcings are also responsible for the peculiar characteristics of Mediterranean water masses.

Gorgonians mass mortality during the 1999 late summer in French Mediterranean coastal waters: the bacterial hypothesis

Water Research, 2002
Mass mortality by tissue necrosis of several species of gorgons was observed during the 1999 late summer on the Liguro-Provençal Mediterranean coasts. We have investigated the occurrence of vibrios on necrosis affected gorgonians Paramuricea clauata and Eunicella cavolinii, and their ability to induce tissue necrosis.

Hydrographic characteristics and interannual variability of water masses in the central Mediterranean: a sensitivity test for long-term changes in the Mediterranean Sea

Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 2002
Hydrographic observations repeated from 1993 to 1999 in the central Mediterranean Sea, between the Sicily Strait and the Sardinia Channel, allowed us to define the water masses exchanged between the Eastern and the Western Mediterranean and the long-term variability of their properties.
