Water mass properties and chemical signatures in the central Mediterranean region

Journal of Marine Systems, 2002
During the last 15 years, the knowledge of Mediterranean physical dynamics as well as of atmospheric forcing underwent a tremendous improvement because of the action within several international programs and the development of remote sensing and modelling approaches.

On the relationship between the water mass pathways and eddy variability in the Western Mediterranean Sea [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 2007
The role of eddies on the formation and spreading of water masses in the Western Mediterranean Sea is studied with an ocean general circulation model. The model is forced with interannually variable surface forcing for the years from 1979 to 1999. It is found that the model reproduces the major features of the observed mesoscale variability in the Gulf

Climate Variability and Water Mass Formation in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea

2012
Recent changes of the thermohaline circulation in the Eastern Mediterranean (i.e. the Eastern Mediterranean Transient) and older observations of the thermohaline structure of the Aegean-Levantine region (with events of dramatic changes of deep water characteristics) reveal the very sensitive character of the regional thermohaline circulation pattern ...

Water Masses in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: An Analysis of Measured Isotopic Oxygen

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2018
We investigate aspects of the water mass structure of the Adriatic and Ionian basins (Eastern Mediterranean Sea) and their interdecadal variability through statistical analyses focused on δ18O measurements carried out in 1985, 1990, and 2011. In particular, the more recent δ18O measurements extend throughout the entire water column and constitute, to ...

Water mass properties and dynamic conditions of the Eastern Mediterranean in June 2007

Progress in Oceanography, 2012
Five locations in the Eastern Mediterranean, situated in the Ionian Sea, Cretan passage and Levantine basin, were characterized for their physical and biogeochemical properties on the basis of the data collected during an oceanographic cruise in June 2007.

Beyond Megaprojects?. Water Alternatives for Mass Tourism in Coastal Mediterranean Spain

Water Resources Management, 2012
Water availability in adequate quantities and qualities is a fundamental requirement for tourism. In the Mediterranean, one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, water availability is subject to modest and erratic precipitation figures which may decline with climate change.

Microbial respiration in the Levantine Sea: evolution of the oxidative processes in relation to the main Mediterranean water masses

Deep-Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 2001
First data on microbial respiration in the Levantine Sea are reported with the aim of assessing the distribution of oxidative processes in association with the main Mediterranean water masses and the changing physical structure determined by the Eastern Mediterranean Transient.

Length–mass relationships for transitional water benthic macroinvertebrates in Mediterranean and Black Sea ecosystems

Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2012
Abstract Length–mass relationships are potentially useful tools to estimate individual biomass, assuming a relative invariance within and among populations and, sometimes, among species pertaining to a same family or order. Here, we present a field test of these assumptions in guilds of benthic macroinvertebrates colonising transitional water ...

Chlorophyll distribution throughout the southeastern Mediterranean in relation to the physical structure of the water mass

Journal of Marine Systems, 1995
The spatial distribution of chlorophyll was recorded throughout the southern part of the Levantine Basin of the eastern Mediterranean and was related to patterns of the physical structure and nutrient concentrations. Chlorophyll a concentration in the upper 200 m of the water column ranged from 9.2 to 423 ng l−1, with an overall mean of 126 ± 85.6 (SD)

Distinct Communities of Bacteria and Unicellular Eukaryotes in the Different Water Masses of Cretan Passage Water Column (Eastern Mediterranean Sea)

Current Microbiology
Abstract Understanding the diversity and dynamics of marine microbiota holds significant importance due to their role in maintaining vital ecosystem functions and services including climate regulation and bioremediation. Here, we studied the diversity and associations between Bacteria and unicellular eukaryotes in the different water ...
