Water mass variation in the Mediterranean and Black Seas

open access: yesJournal of Geodynamics, 2012
Abstract The mass-induced sea level variability and the net mass transport between Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea are derived for the interval between August 2002 and July 2008 from satellite-based observations and from model data. We construct in each basin two time series representing the basin mean mass signal in terms of equivalent water height.

Geostatistical Seismic Inversion for Temperature and Salinity in the Madeira Abyssal Plain

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
A two-dimensional multichannel seismic reflection profile acquired in the Madeira Abyssal Plain during June 2016 was used in a modeling workflow comprising seismic oceanography processing, geostatistical inversion and Bayesian classification to predict ...

A quasi-synoptic survey of the thermocline circulation and water mass distribution within the Canary Basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Shipboard hydrographic measurements and moored current meters are used to infer both the large-scale and mesoscale water mass distribution and features of the general circulation in the Canary Basin.

Mediterranean Sea response to climate change in an ensemble of twenty first century scenarios [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The Mediterranean climate is expected to become warmer and drier during the twenty-first century. Mediterranean Sea response to climate change could be modulated by the choice of the socio-economic scenario as well as the choice of the boundary ...

A Glider View of the Spreading and Mixing Processes of Antarctic Intermediate Water in the Northeastern Subtropical Atlantic

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
The Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW), one of the most important global intermediate water masses, spreads over the world ocean. Its propagation limit at the Northeast Subtropical Atlantic is characterized by its encounter with the Mediterranean Water (

Experiment in eastern Mediterranean probes origin of deep water masses

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1996
During the last decade the oceanography community has focused much attention on the Mediterranean Sea. One reason for the growing interest is that the Mediterranean's impact on the Northern Atlantic Ocean is more significant than previously realized. The warm, salty Mediterranean water tongue exits the Gibraltar Straits and spreads throughout the North

Anthropogenic CO2 in the Azores region

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2010
The AZORES-I cruise was conducted in August 1998, spanning the length of three latitudinal large-scale sections at 22, 28 and 32ºW. The oceanic carbon system was oversampled by measuring total alkalinity, total inorganic carbon and pH.

The contrasted phytoplankton dynamics across a frontal system in the southwestern Mediterranean Sea [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2023
Numerical simulations have shown that finescale structures such as fronts are often suitable places for the generation of vertical velocities, transporting subsurface nutrients to the euphotic zone and thus modulating phytoplankton abundance and ...

Interbasin deep water exchange in the western Mediterranean [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Owing to its nearly enclosed nature, the Tyrrhenian Sea at first sight is expected to have a small impact on the distribution and characteristics of water masses in the other basins of the western Mediterranean, The first evidence that the Tyrrhenian Sea

Water Masses of the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea: An Overview

open access: yesWater, 2023
This overview presents the different water masses present in the various primary and secondary marine regions of the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, providing information on their main physical characteristics (i.e., temperature, salinity, density), the water depths at which they have been observed and the processes involved in their formation.
