Infarction of the conus medullaris
Annals of Neurology, 1987AbstractWe describe 5 patients who presented with an acute cauda equina syndrome, which we believe was due to infarction of the conus medullaris. In 3 patients, the onset was spontaneous, and in 2 patients it was secondary to temporary occlusion of the distal aorta during medical manipulation.

Schwannoma of the conus medullaris
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2005We report a rare case of schwannoma of the conus medullaris. A 38-year-old female presented with pain and numbness in her lower limbs. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a heterogenous tumour of the conus medullaris. A subtotal resection was performed and histology confirmed schwannoma.

It originates in the thyroid parafollicular or C cells that are of neural crest origin and that secrete calcitonin. Calcitonin measurements, particularly after pentagastrim administration, are useful in detecting the tumor and following its progression.
