Extracranial medulloepithelioma: a review of the literature

Medulloepithelioma is a rare, malignant tumor that typically arises in the periventricular region of the cerebral hemispheres or the ciliary body of the eye. Even rarer still is the extracranial manifestation of medulloepithelioma with only 12 cases reported to date.

Medulloepithelioma of the optic disc

A 6-year-old boy with a history of an amblyopic, occasionally red left eye was found to have a solid white mass overlying the optic disc on dilated ocular fundus examination. Transvitreal endoincisional biopsy of the mass yielded neoplastic tissue consistent with intraocular medulloepithelioma.
