Abstract Aragonite undersaturation (Ωar < 1) events are projected to rapidly increase in frequency and duration in the Antarctic Weddell Sea by 2050. Thecosome pteropods (pelagic snails) are bioindicators of ocean acidification (OA) because their aragonite shell dissolves easily at low Ωar saturation states.

The impact of aragonite saturation variability on shelled pteropods: An attribution study in the California Current System

Global Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 6, June 2024.
Observational evidence from the California Current System indicates that the long‐term ocean acidification trend is severely damaging shelled pteropods, an indicator species for ocean health. This damage is linked to their vertical migration, which exposes them to more damaging conditions at depth.
