Fascinating single‐cell red algae: models for evolution and adaptation

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary The unicellular red algae, Cyanidiophyceae, that diverged early during Archaeplastida (algal and plant) evolution, occupy a variety of extreme habitats that are inhospitable for most other eukaryotes. With the use of modern genomics and genetics methods, Cyanidiophyceae show a remarkable taxonomic diversity, share haplodiplophasic life cycles ...

Equipped for success: genomes and metabolomes of the European Amanita muscaria are conserved in its novel South African range

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Plants and soils have been moved around the world for centuries, but invasive mushrooms receive scant attention. The Amanita muscaria species complex was introduced to South Africa in the context of forestry, but its origins, ecology and recent evolution are unstudied. We sequenced the genomes of 24 Northern and Southern Hemisphere A. muscaria,

Dotted Pigmentation of the Cuticle

open access: yesPediatric Dermatology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Longitudinal melanonychia in children is usually caused by nail matrix nevi and often fades over time. Pediatric patients with this finding are frequently referred to dermatologists due to concerns that it may represent melanoma. We report a case of a 4‐year‐old girl with longitudinal melanonychia on the left second fingernail, accompanied by ...

Therapeutic effect of NEO400, perillyl alcohol conjugated to linoleic acid, in a mouse model of UV‐induced skin damage

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, Volume 101, Issue 2, Page 338-349, March/April 2025.
In the present work with mouse models, we demonstrate that a novel compound, NEO400, is able to profoundly protect skin against damage caused by UV radiation (UVR) when it is applied to skin post‐UVR exposure. In comparison, Aloe vera or linoleic acid are unable to achieve a similar level of protection.
