The Melanocytes of Mammals

The Quarterly Review of Biology, 1960
Melanocytes may be regarded as unicellular, pigment-secreting glands, largely though not entirely confined to the epidermis, of which they are a constant though often un-recognized cellular component. Their numerical incidence, and their branching form, with numerous dichotomizing processes, are such as to form a reticular system within the epidermis ...

Senescent human melanocytes drive skin ageing via paracrine telomere dysfunction

open access: yesEMBO Journal, 2019
Cellular senescence has been shown to contribute to skin ageing. However, the role of melanocytes in the process is understudied. Our data show that melanocytes are the only epidermal cell type to express the senescence marker p16(INK4A) during human ...

The biology of melanocytes

Veterinary Dermatology, 2003
Abstract In veterinary medicine, our understanding of the biology and regulation of melanocytic function is mostly based on information realized from human and murine studies. Improved understanding of the biology of melanocytes is needed to develop more effective treatment regimens for malignant melanoma and other melanocytic disorders. In vertebrates,

Non‐melanocytic mimics of melanocytic neoplasms

Histopathology, 2011
Bhawan J
(2012) Histopathology 60, 715–730
Non‐melanocytic mimics of melanocytic neoplasmsOn histopathologic examination, many non‐neoplastic conditions mimic benign or malignant neoplasms. Alternatively, some benign and malignant neoplasms can also mimic non‐neoplastic lesions. This is true of all organ systemsskin is no exception.

Studies on Melanocytes: VI. Melanocytes in the Middle Ear

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1982
Melanocytes are present in the lamina propria of the middle ear mucosa of young children to elderly adults in both whites and blacks. Melanin pigment melanin pigment also is seen in the epithelial cells, so-called melanogenic metaplasia. The melanocytes in the middle ear mucosa are of neural crest origin and their presence explains melanocytic tumors ...

Melanocytic lesions and melanocyte populations in human epidermis

British Journal of Dermatology, 1991
Basal melanocytes were counted and atypia assessed on an arbitrary scale in punch biopsies from the sun-exposed extensor aspect of the forearm of normal skin and from the covered skin of the buttock of patients with pigmented naevi and control subjects.

Keratotic Melanocytic Nevus

International Journal of Dermatology, 1990
Abstract:Thirty‐five percent of 363 melanocytic nevi were found to have a keratotic epithelial architectural pattern that was mostly infundibular and not previously emphasized. Keratotic melanocytic nevi were commonly from the trunk of women, and most were associated with an intradermal melanocytic nevus.
