The surgical management of melanoma continues to evolve. A large body of information serves as a foundation for the oncologic principles, surgical excisions, and reconstructive methodologies that are currently in use. This article serves as a guide for the physician considering surgical management of the melanoma patient.

Melanoma is a common cancer in the Western world with an increasing incidence. Sun exposure is still considered to be the major risk factor for melanoma. The prognosis of patients with malignant (advanced-stage) melanoma differs widely between countries, but public campaigns advocating early detection have led to significant reductions in mortality ...

This chapter discusses the value of FDG-PET and combined FDG-PET/CT in staging and follow-up of melanoma patients. For melanoma patients, the presence or absence of regional lymph node metastases is one of the most important prognostic factors; the recent development of sentinel lymph node biopsy offers a highly sensitive staging method.

THE COMPARISONA. Acral lentiginous melanoma on the sole of the foot of a 30-year-old Black woman. The depth of the lesion was 2 mm with a positive sentinel lymph node biopsy.B. Nodular melanoma on the shoulder of a 63-year-old Hispanic woman. The depth of the lesion was 5.5 mm with a positive sentinel lymph node biopsy.

Cutaneous melanoma causes 55 500 deaths annually. The incidence and mortality rates of the disease differ widely across the globe depending on access to early detection and primary care. Once melanoma has spread, this type of cancer rapidly becomes life-threatening.

Cutaneous melanoma is becoming more common. Although still rarer than some cancers it is important, particularly as it afflicts young adults relatively frequently. Furthermore early detection with resultant better prognosis should be achievable if the public was to become more aware, and if health-care professionals were more familiar with melanoma ...

Melanomas are a wide range of tumors that differ in their epidemiology, morphology, genetic profile, and biological behavior. They can be grouped as superficial spreading melanoma, lentigo maligna, and nodular melanoma. Reflectance confocal microscopy is useful for the evaluation of skin lesions that are dermoscopically doubtful by increasing ...

Melanoma incidence is rising worldwide and has doubled in Denmark over the past 25 years. Early detection is essential but challenging due to difficulties in diagnosing early melanomas and atypical nevi. This review discusses melanoma diagnostic processes in the Danish healthcare system, highlighting current and emerging diagnostic tools. More accurate
