Spatial and temporal variation in female wild turkey roost‐site selection

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue S1, December 2025.
We assessed roost‐site selection by 355 female eastern wild turkeys in relation to distance to roads, water, and openings during the leaf‐on and leaf‐off seasons across the 3 ecoregions of North Carolina, USA. Female wild turkeys roosted closer to water across seasons and roosted closer to roads and open land cover during the leaf‐on season but not ...

Evaluation of Reproductive Phenology and Ecology of Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) Across the Southeastern United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The primary driver of population growth and sustainability of gallinaceous birds is annual recruitment. Habitat selection by wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo spp.) during reproductive activities could influence production at multiple temporal and ...

Multi‐scale evaluation of eastern wild turkey nest‐site selection and nest survival

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue S1, December 2025.
We investigated eastern wild turkey nest site selection and determined the influence of vegetation and female behavior on nest survival across 3 ecoregions in North Carolina, USA. Female turkeys selected nest sites with greater forb and woody understory, and nests were in areas with more shrubland and herbaceous cover than randomly available.

Factors influencing eastern wild turkey population growth in northeastern South Dakota

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue S1, December 2025.
We incorporated age‐class specific estimates of female survival and lower‐level reproductive parameters from a population of eastern wild turkeys in northeastern South Dakota into a female‐only, 2‐stage pre‐breeding birth‐pulse model and found the finite rate of change indicates this population was declining‐to‐stable.

CONSERVATION OF GENETIC DIVERSITY WITHIN AND AMONG SUBSPECIES OF WILD TURKEY

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2000
: Genetic differences among 5 subspecies of wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) were assessed using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis. DNA marker profiles were obtained for 358 birds, representing a total of 24 populations across North
