Physics of Melt Extraction from the Mantle: Speed and Style [PDF]
Melt extraction from the partially molten mantle is among the fundamental processes shaping the solid Earth today and over geological time. A diversity of properties and mechanisms contribute to the physics of melt extraction. We review progress of the past ∼25 years of research in this area, with a focus on understanding the speed and style of ...

Tailored Magnetic Fields in the Melt Extraction of Metallic Filaments
Porous bodies that are resistant to corrosion at high temperatures and thermal shock may be produced from metallic fibers. In order to accomplish reasonable homogeneity and high porosity, the cross-sectional area of the fibers and the width of distribution thereof need to be small. This article studies two techniques for making fibers.

Mechanisms of melt extraction during lower crustal partial melting
AbstractProgressive vapour‐absent partial melting of a closed rock system increases melt pressure due to an expansion in the volume of the mineral plus melt assemblage. For a locally closed system, we quantify the melt pressure increase per increment of partial melting of a metapelite using phase equilibria modelling and combine it with Mohr–Coulomb ...

Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, 2009
Melt extraction from the Earth's mantle requires some form of channelized flow to produce the observed disequilibrium between the crust-forming lavas and their mantle sources. In this review, we discuss the influence of deformation on melt-extraction processes, with an emphasis on the understanding gained from a wide range of laboratory experimental ...

Production of TiNi fibers by melt extraction
Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics, 2008The paper examines the production of TiNi fibers by pendent-drop melt extraction in vacuum. The mean effective diameter of the continuous fibers produced is 37 µm. Resistometrical investigation establishes that martensitic transformations in the fibers start at Ms = 17 °C.

Amorphous CaO · Al2O3 fibers by melt extraction
Materials Science & Engineering A: Structural Materials: Properties, Microstructure and Processing, 1996Abstract A novel melt extraction technique has been used to produce fine calcium aluminate (CaO · Al 2 O 3 ) fibers with wheel velocities of 1.5–65 m s −1 . The geometry of the fibers depends on the wheel velocity; at speeds −1 uniform diameter fibers were obtained, whereas at higher velocities Rayleigh waves formed on the fibers owing to ...
