Implementation of Drug‐Induced Rhabdomyolysis and Acute Kidney Injury in Microphysiological System

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A modular Muscle–Kidney proximal tubule‐on‐a‐chip integrates 3D skeletal muscle and renal proximal tubule tissues to model drug‐induced rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury. The coculture system enables dynamic tissue interaction, functional contraction monitoring, and quantification of nephrotoxicity, revealing drug side effect‐induced metabolic ...

Supraparticles Composed of Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanoparticles and Silica‐Supported Horseradish Peroxidase as Customizable Hybrid Catalysts for Photo‐Biocatalytic Cascade Reactions in Continuous Flow

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Herein presented supraparticles combine the nanoparticulate photocatalyst graphitic carbon nitride with the enzyme horseradish peroxidase, which is immobilized on silica nanoparticles. In an optimized compatibility range, both catalysts operate effectively within the hybrid supraparticles and catalyze a cascade reaction consisting of the photocatalytic

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Damaged hyperelastic membranes

International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 2014
Abstract This paper deals with equilibrium problems in non-linear dissipative inelasticity of damaged membranes. The inelastic constitutive law is obtained by modifying the classical constitutive law for a hyperelastic isotropic material through a proper damage function, which allows to measure the effective stress and the dissipated energy.

Membrane damage due to lipid oxidation

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1991
The influence of free radical-mediated oxidations is amplified because it proceeds by a chain mechanism, ie, only one radical can initiate chain reaction which may propagate over and over again. It was found that the in vitro oxidations of erythrocyte membranes proceed by a chain mechanism with a long kinetic chain length.

Photodynamic Membrane Damage

1983
The use of porphyrins in photochemotherapy of neoplastic disease is based on the formation of singlet oxygen (Spikes, 1975; Weishaupt et al., 1976; Kessel, 1981) and possibly hydroxyl radicals (Hariharan et al., 1980), subsequent to photoactivation of the sensitizer. The mechanism of cell killing is still unknown.

Membrane fluidity and bile salt damage

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1981
The lysis, by bile salts, of membranes of different fluidities was studied; it was shown that membranes of low fluidity were less readily lysed than membranes of higher fluidity. Membrane fluidity levels were controlled (i) by the use of erythrocytes, from different species, systematically differing in their lipid composition; (ii) by using each ...

Membrane Damage in Ischemia

1983
Our studies have evaluated the hypothesis that progressive membrane damage, particularly to the plasma membrane, is a major factor in the evolution of myocardial ischemic and hypoxic injury and in particular the conversion from reversible to irreversible injury.
