Combination of Membrane-Based Pre-Treatment Techniques and Heterogeneous Photocatalysis to Obtain High-Quality Effluents from Produced Water

open access: yesMolecules
Produced water is the waste aqueous phase from petroleum extraction. As it contains salts, a high organic load, and toxic organic compounds, it should be treated before disposal or reuse.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Performance improvement of PVDF hollow fiber-based membrane distillation process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The performance of membrane distillation depends on both membrane and module characteristics. This paper describes strategies to improve the performance of hollow fiber membrane modules used in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD).

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Optimization Study of Small-Scale Solar Membrane Distillation Desalination Systems (s-SMDDS) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Membrane distillation (MD), which can utilize low-grade thermal energy, has been extensively studied for desalination. By incorporating solar thermal energy, the solar membrane distillation desalination system (SMDDS) is a potential technology for ...

Downstream variations of air-gap membrane distillation and comparative study with direct contact membrane distillation: A modelling approach

open access: yes, 2021
Air-Gap Membrane Distillation (AGMD) promises to reduce heat loss in membrane distillation. Most AGMD models are one-dimensional and do not consider the downstream variations. In addition, a linear function of vapour pressure is used, which either relies

Temperature and concentration polarization in membrane distillation: a technical review

open access: yesDesalination and Water Treatment, 2021
Recently, the seawater and brackish water desalination process have gained widespread attention due to the scarcity of drinking water. Among several membrane distillation (MD) methods for desalination, vacuum membrane distillation (VMD), and direct ...

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

MITF maintains genome stability in nonmelanocyte lineages

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
MITF is essential for melanocyte survival and acts as an oncogene in 10%–20% of melanomas. We show that MITF depletion causes genome instability in nonmelanocytic cells, leading to LATS2‐mediated P53 activation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. This study highlights the role of MITF as a genome maintenance factor beyond the melanocyte lineage. Created
