Food restriction and membrane fluidity

Mechanisms of Ageing and Development, 1992
The fluidity of the erythrocyte membrane derived from growing rats raised under restricted food intake was found to be higher than the fluidity of the respective membranes from ad libitum fed animals. Considering the apparent relationship between the decrease in membrane fluidity and aging, the results point to the possible beneficial effects of food ...

Fluidity of human erythrocyte membrane and effect of chlorpromazine on fluidity and phase separation of membrane

Biochimica Et Biophysica Acta - Biomembranes, 1981
The fluidity of human erythrocyte membrane, and the effect of chlorpromazine at prelytic and lytic concentrations on the fluidity have been studied by using three kinds of fatty acid spin labels and measuring the temperature dependence of Mg2+-ATPase activity. The Arrhenius plot of the apparent rotational correlation time, tau c, for probes I(12,3) and

Regulators of Membrane Fluidity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Caenorhabditis elegans PAQR-2 (a homolog of the mammalian AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 proteins) and IGLR-2 (homolog of the mammalian LRIG proteins) form a complex at the plasma membrane that regulates fatty acid desaturation to protect against saturated fatty acid-induced membrane rigidification.

Membrane fluidity of stressed cells of Oenococcus oeni

open access: yesInternational Journal of Food Microbiology, 2000
International audienceThe determination of membrane fluidity in whole cells of Oenococcus oeni was achieved by membrane probe 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene fluorescence anisotropy measurements.

Membrane Fluidity and Alcohol Dependence

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1986
Rats were chronically intoxicated with alcohol by exposing them to increasing concentrations of ethanol vapor over a 4‐week period. They were tested for alcohol consumption in a free choice situation of water and 10% (v/v) alcohol. On the basis of their intakes they were divided into alcohol‐dependent and nondependent groups.

Fluidity of Thyroid Plasma Membranes

1988
The main function of the thyroid cell is the secretion of thyroid hormones (T4, thyroxine; T3, triiodothyronine). Thyroid hormones are first synthesized as part of thyroglobulin. Newly synthesized thyroglobulin is iodinated and vectorially transported to the apical region of the cell and released for storage in the lumen by exocytosis.

The Effects of Drugs on Membrane Fluidity

Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology, 1984
Anesthetics almost always disorder or "fluidize" membranes, i.e. the drugs increase the mobility of spin labels and reduce order parameters. This effect is universal at high concentrations above the clinical range, but in some kinds of membranes low concentrations of drugs have an ordering effect.

Cell membrane fluidity and prostaglandins

Medical Hypotheses, 1981
Abstract It is proposed that prostaglandins may bring about some of their actions by altering cell membrane fluidity.

Membrane Fluidity and Cancer Metastasis

Experimental Cell Biology, 2008
The membrane fluidity of murine B16 melanoma and L5178 lymphoma variants is examined in relation to their metastatic potential. A higher lateral mobility of membrane proteins in metastasis is indicated by lectin receptor-mediated agglutination studies, but these do not constitute incontrovertible evidence that higher fluidity might be relevant in the ...
