Neuronal membrane lipid asymmetry

Life Sciences, 1979
Abstract The outer surface of intact synaptosomes was covalently labelled with trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid prior to isolation of the synaptic plasma membrane. Analysis of the membrane lipid demonstrated an asymmetric distribution of phospholipids across the synaptosomal plasma membrane.

Lipids in amniotic membranes

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1965
Abstract 1. 1. Total lipids, phospholipids, esterified fatty acids (EFA), and cholesterol were studied in 167 amniotic membranes. These membranes were taken from 60 women of European origin, 63 women of Oriental origin, and 44 women of Yemenite origin. Venous blood was also studied for total lipids in these three groups of women. 2. 2.

Spherical lipid bilayer membranes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1967
Abstract 1. 1. The formation of a new model membrane system is described. In its final configuration this system consists of four phases: a spherical bilayer membrane several mm in diameter, a bulk lipid phase which takes the form of a cap or lens covering less than 10% of the spherical surface, and two aqueous phases, one on each side of the ...

Biosynthesis of Membrane Lipids

EcoSal Plus, 2008
The pathways in Escherichia coli and (largely by analogy) S. enterica remain the paradigm of bacterial lipid synthetic pathways, although recently considerable diversity among bacteria in the specific areas of lipid synthesis has been demonstrated.

Ethanol and Membrane Lipids

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1985
Although ethanol is known to exert its primary mode of action on the central nervous system, the exact molecular interaction underlying the behavioral and physiological manifestations of alcohol intoxication has not been elucidated. Chronic ethanol administration results in changes in organ functions.

Thin Lipid Membranes

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1972
The permeability properties of "unmodified" thin ( carriers with high specificity for K + over Na + ; some create aqueous pores approximately 4A in radius; others create strongly voltage-dependent conductance sites that can give rise to action potentials kinetically similar to those of nerve and muscle.

Lipid-polypeptide interactions in bilayer lipid membranes

The Journal of Membrane Biology, 1972
The modifications of the electrical properties of bilayer lipid membranes (BLM) composed of cholesterol and an ionic surfactant upon interaction with charged polypeptides were studied. The addition of 10(-8) M polylysine (Ps(+)) to one side of anionic cholesterol dodecylphosphate BLM increases the specific membrane conductance over 1000-fold (from 10 ...
