Pilot-scale spiral wound membrane assessment for THM precursor rejection from upland waters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The outcomes of a pilot-scale study of the rejection of trihalomethanes (THMs) precursors by commercial ultrafiltration/nanofiltration (UF/NF) spiral-wound membrane elements are presented based on a single surface water source in Scotland.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Preparation of a self‐supported zeolite glass composite membrane for CO2/CH4 separation

open access: yesSmart Molecules
The low porosity of metal‐organic framework glass makes it difficult to prepare membranes with high permeability. To solve this problem, we fabricated a series of self‐supported zeolite glass composite membranes with different 4A zeolite loadings using ...

Measurement of the bending rigidity and spontaneous curvature of fluid membranes in simulations

open access: yes, 2011
Several numerical methods for measuring the bending rigidity and the spontaneous curvature of fluid membranes are studied using two types of meshless membrane models.

Pressure effects on lipids and bio-membrane assemblies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Membranes are amongst the most important biological structures; they maintain the fundamental integrity of cells, compartmentalize regions within them and play an active role in a wide range of cellular processes.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Research Progress in Flexible Wearable Strain Sensors Based on Polydimethylsiloxane

open access: yesCailiao gongcheng, 2018
Traditional electronic strain sensors based on metal and semiconductor materials have poor flexibility and wear-ability, which are not applicable for stretchable sensors.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Ion and Water Transports in Double Gyroid Nanochannels Formed by Block Copolymer Anion Exchange Membranes

open access: yesBatteries
Mechanically improved polymeric membranes with high ionic conductivity (IC) and good permeability are highly desired for next-generation anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in order to reduce Ohmic losses and enhance water management in alkaline membrane ...
