Salinity Alters Toxicity of Commonly Used Pesticides in a Model Euryhaline Fish Species (Menidia beryllina) [PDF]

open access: yesToxics, 2021
Changing salinity in estuaries due to sea level rise and altered rainfall patterns, as a result of climate change, has the potential to influence the interactions of aquatic pollutants as well as to alter their toxicity. From a chemical property point of

Fluctuating asymmetry in Menidia beryllina before and after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Assessing the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill with a dependable baseline comparison can provide reliable insight into environmental stressors on organisms that were potentially affected by the spill.

Transcriptional flexibility during thermal challenge corresponds with expanded thermal tolerance in an invasive compared to native fish

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, 2021
Capacity to cope with warming temperatures is a key determining factor of species' persistence under global climate change. Many successful invasive species have heightened thermal tolerance relative to their native counterparts, which may provide ...

Effects of Beauveria bassiana on embryos of the inland silverside fish (Menidia beryllina). [PDF]

open access: yesAppl Environ Microbiol, 1992
A chemical toxicity and teratogenicity test was adapted to assess potential adverse effects of a microbial pest control agent on a nontarget fish. Developing embryos of the inland silverside, Menidia beryllina, were exposed to conidiospores of the insect-pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. Embryo rupture and death were observed.

Retention of elements absorbed by juvenile fish (Menidia menidia, Menidia beryllina) from zooplankton prey [PDF]

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, 1994
Radiolabeled copepods (Acartia spp.) were fed to juvenile silversides (Menidia menidia and Menidia beryllina) to study clement absorption in the fish. Copepods were reared from nauplii in the presence of different radiotracers (14C,109Cd, 57Co, 32P,35S,75Se, or 65Zn) and were analyzed for relative concentrations of these elements in their tissue ...

Behavioral and molecular effects of micro and nanoplastics across three plastic types in fish: weathered microfibers induce a similar response to nanosized particles [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Toxicology
Micro and nanoplastics (MNPs) are ubiquitous in the environment and have been detected in most ecosystems, including remote regions. The class of contaminants under the MNP umbrella is quite broad and encompasses variable polymer types, shapes, and sizes.

Temperature, Acidification, and Food Supply Interact to Negatively Affect the Growth and Survival of the Forage Fish, Menidia beryllina (Inland Silverside), and Cyprinodon variegatus (Sheepshead Minnow)

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
Climate change processes are warming, acidifying, and promoting a reduction of plankton biomass within World oceans. While the effects of these stressors on marine fish have been studied individually, their combined and interactive impacts remain unclear.

Direct and indirect parental exposure to endocrine disruptors and elevated temperature influences gene expression across generations in a euryhaline model fish [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
Aquatic organisms inhabiting polluted waterways face numerous adverse effects, including physiological disruption by endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). Little is known about how the temperatures associated with global climate change may influence the

Resource partitioning by Menidia menidia and Menidia beryllina (Osteichthyes: Atherinidae)

open access: yesMarine Ecology - Progress Series, 1984
Etude du chevauchement de la niche ecologique et du partage des ressources chez ces deux especes dans deux estuaires du Rhode Island. Au cours du printemps, le chevauchement est presque total; il diminue au cours de l'ete et de l'automne.

Natural and synthetic microfibers alter growth and behavior in early life stages of estuarine organisms

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Increasing shares of microfibers are being detected in environmental samples and a closer look to identify the risk associated with them using ecologically relevant endpoints, especially at sensitive early life stages, is needed.
