Orbital Complications of Acute Rhinosinusitis in Adulthood: Predictors of Outcome and Management

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
In a multicenter cohort of 213 adults with orbital complications of acute rhinosinusitis, 68% required surgery and the modified Chandler classification was the strongest predictor of treatment modality. While abscess‐related and type II complications frequently necessitated surgical management, final ophthalmologic outcomes were uniformly favorable ...

Bacterial meningitis in Nottingham [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hygiene, 1983
SUMMARYRecords of 171 cases of bacterial meningitis admitted to Nottingham hospitals from January 1974 to June 1980 were reviewed. The distribution of organisms producing meningitis and the factors influencing mortality in different age groups were assessed.

Dual glycosylation of wall teichoic acid modulates the O‐antigen pattern and virulence in serovar 4b Listeria monocytogenes

open access: yesmLife, EarlyView.
Abstract Among the 14 serovars of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), serovar 4b strains are the most predominant isolates linked to human listeriosis outbreaks‐a phenotype associated with their unique wall teichoic acid (WTA) decorated with galactose (Gal) and glucose (Glu).

ArgR is an essential local transcriptional regulator of the arcABC-operon in Streptococcus suis and crucial for biological fitness in acidic environment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Streptococcus suis is one of the most important pathogens in pigs and can also cause severe infections in humans. Despite its clinical relevance very little is known about the factors contributing to its virulence.

Host–pathogen interactions in bacterial meningitis

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica, 2016
Bacterial meningitis is a devastating disease occurring worldwide with up to half of the survivors left with permanent neurological sequelae. Due to intrinsic properties of the meningeal pathogens and the host responses they induce, infection can cause ...

The utility of C‐reactive protein in neonatal early‐onset sepsis screening: A territory‐wide cohort analysis

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
C‐reactive protein (CRP) is not recommended for early‐onset sepsis (EOS) screening in term neonates. CRP results can support EOS risk assessment in preterm neonates, but should be interpreted appropriately with other clinical parameters. A CRP level of >12.0 mg/L may suggest the need for lumbar puncture during sepsis evaluation.

Demystifying fungal systematics: A gateway to fungal literacy and societal/ecological relevance through familiar species

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Fungal systematics can feel overwhelming given the vast species diversity within this kingdom, with numerous subgroups at every taxonomic rank. This often creates a disconnect between the undertsnidng of fungal taxonomic diversity and their societal relevance.
