A study has been made of 12 patients with pneumococcal meningitis with ages ranging from 12 months to 59 years. In all cases pneumococcus was isolated in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Seventeen pneumococci were studied for their sensitivity to fosfomycin, ampicillin and gentamicin, including their MIC.

Pneumococcal Meningitis in Adults

A retrospective study was conducted to examine the clinical features and outcome of 31 adult pneumococcal meningitis patients during the years 1981-92. The incidence was 1.0/100,000 adults/year. The case fatality rate was 16% (5/31), and in patients older than 70 years, 33% (3/9). Sequelae were seen in 29% (7/24), mostly otoneurologic symptoms.

Cefotaxime in pneumococcal meningitis

Forty-six consecutive patients with pneumococcal meningitis were treated with cefotaxime (CTX). Ages ranged from 1-79 years: 29 adults, six adolescents, six children and five infants. Underlying diseases were found in 38 patients (82.6%). Twenty-six patients (56.5%) were admitted in coma.

We review the clinical and laboratory features of 79 children with 83 episodes of pneumococcal meningitis over a 26-year period. The onset of illness was often severe, with convulsions occurring in 31% of the patients. The mortality was 10.8% and all deaths occurred in patients younger than 1 year of age; the death rate has dropped from 19% in the 1948
