An Economic Evaluation of Direct Oral Penicillin Challenge for De‐Labelling Low Risk Patients With a Penicillin Allergy Label

open access: yesClinical &Experimental Allergy, Volume 55, Issue 5, Page 378-390, May 2025.
The cost of the Direct Oral Penicillin Challenge (DPC) itself is only a fraction of the full costs required to test for a penicillin allergy label by non‐allergists. The costs of DPC varied between hospitals using a nurse‐led, pharmacist‐led, or mixture of pharmacists and nurses.

Inhibition of Alternative and Terminal Complement Pathway Components Modulate the Immune Response Against Bacteria and Fungi in Whole Blood

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Immunology, Volume 101, Issue 5, May 2025.
Complement inhibition (factor D, C3, C5, or C5aR1) blunts inflammation induced by Escherichia coli or Aspergillus fumigatus conidia in lepirudin‐treated whole blood. Inhibition decreases inflammatory markers, reduces anaphylatoxin receptor expression, and lowers cytokine production and phagocytic activity. Created in https://BioRender.com.

Escherichia coli in the production of biopharmaceuticals

open access: yesBiotechnology and Applied Biochemistry, Volume 72, Issue 2, Page 528-541, April 2025.
Abstract Escherichia coli has shouldered a massive workload with the discovery of recombinant DNA technology. A new era began in the biopharmaceutical industry with the production of insulin, the first recombinant protein, in E. coli and its use in treating diabetes. After insulin, many biopharmaceuticals produced from E. coli have been approved by the

Position statement on the management of pregnancy in sickle cell disease

open access: yesAustralian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Volume 65, Issue 2, Page 183-189, April 2025.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary haemoglobinopathy which causes multi‐organ dysfunction. Pregnancies in SCD are high risk with significant maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, including vaso‐occlusive crises, thrombosis, anaemia, placental insufficiency, fetal growth restriction, preterm birth and medication effects. High level evidence

Meningococcal disease in adolescents and young adults: a review of the rationale for prevention through vaccination

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2019
Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) caused by Neisseria meningitidis is characterized by high mortality and morbidity. While IMD incidence peaks in both infants and adolescents/young adults, carriage rates are often highest in the latter age groups ...
