Brain damage: neglect disrupts the mental number line.
Nature, 2002A popular metaphor for the representation of numbers in the brain is the 'mental number line', in which numbers are represented in a continuous, quantity-based analogical format. Here we show that patients with hemispatial neglect misplace the midpoint of a numerical interval when asked to bisect it (for example, stating that five is halfway between ...

As indicated by the distance effect and the spatial-numerical association of response codes (SNARC) effect, natural numbers are mentally represented on a number line, Purportedly, this number line underlies children's number sense, which supports the acquisition of more advanced mathematical competencies, In 3 studies with a total of 429 fifth and ...

Impairments of the mental number line for two-digit numbers in neglect
Cortex, 2008Humans represent numbers along a left-to-right oriented Mental Number Line (MNL). Neglect patients seem to neglect the left part of the MNL, namely the smaller numbers within a given numerical interval. However, until now all studies examining numerical representation have focussed on single-digit numbers or two-digit numbers smaller than 50.

Computer-Supported Training of the Mental Number Line
International Conference on Computers in Education, 2013The human representation of number magnitude is often described by the metaphor of a mental number line. Recent studies repeatedly found the accuracy of children’s mental number line representation to be associated with more general arithmetic and mathematic achievement. Therefore, specific number line trainings have been developed. A growing number of
