Relationships among tissues, biofluids, and otolith selenium concentrations in wild female burbot (Lota lota)

open access: yesIntegrated Environmental Assessment and Management, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract In the Lake Koocanusa‐Kootenai River system (Montana, USA and British Columbia, Canada), selenium (Se) contamination has become an international concern and is suspected to contribute to the observed burbot (Lota lota) population collapse. Due to our limited ability to sample burbot in Lake Koocanusa for monitoring studies, we used a reference

The cost of gold: Mercury contamination of fishes in a Neotropical river food web

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology, 2021
In South America, mercury contamination due to gold mining operations is a threat to both biodiversity and human health. We examined mercury (Hg) concentrations in fishes that constitute important subsistence fisheries from mined and non-mined ...

Isotope Effect of Mercury Diffusion in Air [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Science & Technology, 2013
Identifying and reducing impacts from mercury sources in the environment remains a considerable challenge and requires process based models to quantify mercury stocks and flows. The stable isotope composition of mercury in environmental samples can help address this challenge by serving as a tracer of specific sources and processes.

New evidence for atmospheric mercury transformations in the marine boundary layer from stable mercury isotopes [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2020
The marine boundary layer (MBL) is the largest transport place and reaction vessel of atmospheric mercury (Hg). The transformations of atmospheric Hg in the MBL are crucial for the global transport and deposition of Hg.

Investigation of the E2 and E3 matrix elements in 200Hg using inelastic scattering

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2014
A nuclear structure campaign has been initiated to investigate the isotopes of mercury near A = 199. Currently 199Hg provides the most stringent limit on an atomic electric dipole moment (EDM).

Trophic structure and mercury biomagnification in tropical fish assemblages, Iténez River, Bolivia. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
We examined mercury concentrations in three fish assemblages to estimate biomagnification rates in the Iténez main river, affected by anthropogenic activities, and two unperturbed rivers from the Iténez basin, Bolivian Amazon.

Mercury isotopes of key tissues document mercury metabolic processes in seabirds [PDF]

open access: yesChemosphere, 2021
Seabirds accumulate significant amounts of mercury (Hg) due to their long-life span together with their medium to high trophic position in marine food webs. Hg speciation and Hg isotopic analyses of total Hg in different tissues (pectoral muscles, liver, brain, kidneys, blood and feathers) were assessed to investigate their detoxification mechanisms ...

Study of mercury transport and transformation in mangrove forests using stable mercury isotopes. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Mangrove forests are important wetland ecosystems that are a sink for mercury from tides, rivers and precipitation, and can also be sources of mercury production and export.

Boosting Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting Activity of Phosphorene Through Five‐Coordinate Passivation Enabled by Carbene Addition

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
We report selective five‐coordinate passivation of phosphorene via P═C double bonds using a facile one‐step photochemical reaction via carbene addition. The ambient stability of functionalized phosphorene has been substantially improved compared to the pristine phosphorene.
