Laser Engineering of HfN‐Based Nanoparticles for Safe NIR‐I Photothermal and X‐ray Enhancing Cancer Therapies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, we produced HfN‐based nanoparticles via femtosecond laser ablation in acetone. The nanoparticles exhibit a red‐shifted plasmonic resonance in the NIR‐I window, colloidal stability after coating with polyethyleneglycol, and excellent biocompatibility. The photothermal and X‐ray sensitization therapeutic effects were demonstrated for tumor

Mercury removal from aqueous process streams [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
A simple method for removing mercury from aqueous process streams has been developed. The system consists of a column packed with finely ground vulcanized rubber preceded by a liquid cyclone separator. In one test, a pilot- scale packed bed containing finely ground tire rubber produced an effluent having < 10 ppb mercury for 170 bed volumes throughput,

Polymer Infiltration Into SURMOF Channels Enables Hydrophobic and Solid‐Like Slippery Functional Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report a polymer‐chain insertion strategy to fabricate pore‐threaded MOF thin films with precisely tuned surface chemistry and wettability. Grafting n‐alkane chains into the pillared layer Cu2(bdc)2(dabco) MOF thin film's vertical nanochannels enhances water stability, and induces hydrophobicity and lubricant‐free, solid‐like slippery behavior ...

Modelling of Hg Removal from Gaseous Streams and its Fixation in Hydroxyapatite-Based Adsorbents Modified with Copper Sulphide

open access: yesAdsorption Science & Technology, 2015
In this work, a mathematical model of a fixed-bed process for elemental mercury removal from gaseous streams is proposed. Advective and diffusive processes were taken into account in the macroscopic mass balance along the bed, and diffusive process was ...

Shape‐Changing Multiphase Microparticles from Complex Liquid Crystal Emulsions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid crystalline network (LCN) microparticles are prepared from single, double (Janus), and triple emulsions through a simple and scalable bulk‐emulsification strategy. Under heating, the particles exhibit robust, reversible, large‐amplitude deformations that depend both on the morphology and the liquid crystals director field configuration.

Porous Coatings by Vapor Sublimation and Deposition for Molecular Channeling and Filtration in an Interstitial Fluid Microfiltration Device

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A vapor‐based porous coating applied within nitinol tubes demonstrated complete suppression of cellular and tissue ingrowth, overcoming a major limitation of implantable interstitial fluid collection devices. Molecular channeling and diffusion are analyzed with probe molecules, showing reliable transport in vitro and in vivo. The coating also achieved >
