Like Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), Meriones libycus develop an intestinal lipodystrophy due to myo-inositol deficiency. Fat accumulation was observed in the intestine of both species when a myo-inositol-deficient diet containing coconut oil was fed to female gerbils.
