Interaction of merocyanine 540 with charged membranes

Bioelectrochemistry, 2002
In this work, phospholipid liposomes were used to investigate the influence of lipid negative charge on the interaction of merocyanine 540 (MC540) with model membranes. Liposomes were prepared from a mixture of neutral dimyristoyl lecithin (DMPC) and negatively charged dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid (DMPA).

Carotenoid and Merocyanine Probes in Chromatophore Membranes

1975
Increasing awareness of the vast amount of information that can be obtained from intrinsic and extrinsic probes of membrane phenomena has led to a wide-ranging survey of the properties of both types of probe. Intrinsic probes of photosynthetic membranes are provided by the carotenoid pigments.

Highly Fluorescent Merocyanine and Cyanine PMMA Copolymers

Macromolecular Rapid Communications, 2018
AbstractPolymerizable merocyanine and cyanine dye monomers are synthesized and applied in a statistical copolymerization with methylmethacrylate, giving a series of highly fluorescent poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) copolymers. Photophysical properties of yellow to red merocyanine‐ and of pink to dark purple cyanine‐containing copolymers are studied ...

Destruction of membranes by merocyanine 540

Journal of Luminescence, 1997
Abstract The effect of a photosensitizer merocyanine 540 (MC 540) on the bilayer structure of model phospholipid membranes was studied using diphenylhexatriene (DPH) fluorescence anisotropy and light-scattering techniques. A pronounced reduction of DPH anisotropy decay within 60 min of DPH incubation was induced by the presence of MC 540 in lecithin ...

Demystifying the solvatochromic reversal in Brooker’s merocyanine dye

Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011
Based on hybrid QM/MM simulation techniques, we rationalize the spectacular solvatochromic reversal behavior observed for a stilbazolium merocyanine (SM) called Brooker's merocyanine dye. This solvatochromic reversal is attributed to a change in the solute π-electron distribution from zwitterionic to neutral following the change in solvents from polar ...

Photochemical switching through protonation in merocyanines

Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, 1999
Abstract The ground- and excited-state energies for the planar and various 90-degree twisted structures of the merocyanine Me2N–CHCH–CHCH–CHO and its protonated form + Me 2 N CH–CHCH–CHCH–OH have been calculated by the AM1 method involving complete geometry optimization.

Solvent effects on merocyanine spectra

Spectrochimica Acta, 1958
Abstract Solvent effects on the visible absorption spectra of three merocyanine dyes are described. The dyes comprise two (I and II) of exceedingly high polarity, and a third (III) less polar than I and II but still highly polar by ordinary standards.

Merocyanines: potential new anticancer agents.

Anticancer research, 1988
We report the synthesis of a series of merocyanines and the structure-effect relationship as cytotoxic agents for human adenocarcinoma cells in vitro. The cytotoxicity of these compounds in vitro makes them potential anticancer agents. One of these compounds was found active on human and mouse tumor models.
