Our study highlights the consequences of land‐use change for native savanna biodiversity across a broad rainfall gradient in tropical India. We document how agricultural conversion and afforestation of old‐growth savannas in India destroy and degrade native herbaceous plant communities that do not spontaneously recover on fallowed land.
