Characterization of the gastrointestinal microbiome of the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) and comparison to data from mice. [PDF]
To gain insight into the Syrian hamsters' (RjHan:AURA) microbiome, different gastrointestinal sections were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Distinct differences in bacterial communities before and after the cecum were found. Comparison to data from C57BL/6J mice displayed strong differences.

Perineuronal Nets in Syrian Hamsters: Anatomical Localization, Sex Differences, Diurnal Variation, and Response to Social Stress. [PDF]
Syrian hamsters exhibit an anatomical distribution of perineuronal nets (PNNs) that is unique from that observed in other common laboratory rodents. We observed little change in PNNs based on lighting or after social defeat stress, but we did find significant sex differences in PNNs, indicating that studies of PNN function should include both sexes ...

Early maternal experience shapes offspring performance in the wild [PDF]
Both the environments experienced by a mother as a juvenile and an adult can affect her investment in offspring. However, the implications of these maternal legacies, both juvenile and adult, for offspring fitness in natural populations are unclear.
