Chamber specific expression of Myosin heavy chain 7b in the heart of vertebrates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In extant vertebrates, myosin heavy chain (MyHC) 6 and 7 are the main isoforms of atrial and ventricular myocardium respectively, whereas MyHC7b has been proposed to be an ancient cardiac isoform only expressed during embryonic development in modern ...

Natural Mutation in Naked Mole‐Rat UCP1 Refutes Importance of the Histidine Pair Motif for Proton Conductance and Thermogenesis

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 241, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is the crucial protein for non‐shivering thermogenesis in placental mammals, but the molecular mechanism of thermogenic proton transport is still unknown. Its histidine pair motif (H145 and H147) has been claimed as a critical element for proton translocation, leading to the paradigmatic “cofactor model” of the ...

Illumination and Food Deprivation as Determinants for Hoarding in Golden Hampsters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
It is important for animals to adapt to changes in food availability in order to survive. Hoarding is one method of accomplishing this and the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is particularly adept at hoarding.

Time and Media‐Dependent Modulation of Sperm Capacitation in Red‐Rumped Agouti (Dasyprocta leporina Linnaeus, 1758)

open access: yesMolecular Reproduction and Development, Volume 92, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT The increasing focus on understanding spermatozoa mechanisms in rodents aims to enhance reproductive stability and support conservation efforts, particularly for ecologically significant and declining species like the red‐rumped agouti. We aimed to evaluate the interaction between capacitation media and time, testing BSA concentrations—low (4 ...

Hereditary hydrocephalus internus in a laboratory strain of golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Golden hamsters of one common laboratory strain had a high incidence of hydrocephalus internus. When a severity score of hydrocephalus was used, a major autosomal recessive locus could be identified.

Photoperiodic influences on ultradian rhythms of male Siberian hamsters. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Seasonal changes in mammalian physiology and behavior are proximately controlled by the annual variation in day length. Long summer and short winter day lengths markedly alter the amplitude of endogenous circadian rhythms and may affect ultradian ...

Spontaneous alternation in Mesocricetus auratus: Age differences [PDF]

open access: yesPsychonomic Science, 1968
The spontaneous alternation performances of three groups of hamsters, 20, 50, and 150 days old, were compared. A positive association was found between age and rate of alternation. These findings were interpreted as additional evidence of the relationship between the ability of an animal to acquire and retain information and the rate at which it ...

Proliferative and neoplastic aural pinna masses in a collection of African giant pouched rats (Cricetomys ansorgei)

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 13, Issue 3, September 2025.
Abstract This case series describes aural lesions occurring in five African giant pouched rats (Cricetomys ansorgei) residing at a single zoological institution in southern California. Age of onset ranged from 3 to 7 years. Lesions occurred as single or multiple masses on one or both ears. A single case also developed a nasal mass.

Effect of losing a fight on later agonistic behavior toward unfamiliar conspecifics in male Syrian hamsters

open access: yesCurrent Zoology, 2011
In many species, agonistic interactions result in social relationships that are stable over time. In Syrian hamsters, two unfamiliar males that are placed together will fight vigorously and a clear winner/loser relationship is usually established.
